Title

The Breadwinner

Description

Note: This film contains violence.

Focuses on a family living during the Taliban's First Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. When Parvana's father is imprisoned and there are no immediate male family members to help support the family, she disguises herself as a boy to assist her family.

While disguised as a boy, Parvana meets another girl who has also disguised herself as a boy, and they bond over their desire for independence.

As other inclusions in this archive indicate how gender creativity can serve a variety of functions in a story, in this film, Parvana's decision to present as a boy is necessary for her family's survival.
