クレオパトラ / Cleopatra
Description
Note: This film contains sexual content, sexual violence, and violence.
A group of time travelers, trying to learn how to defeat an invading alien race who have a “Cleopatra Plan” must travel back in time to when Cleopatra reigned. Their objective is to understand the tactics she used to rule over Egypt, so they can stop the advancing aliens.
While this film currently holds the distinction of being the earliest feature film targeted for adults in the archive, Fred Patten, in an article for Cartoon Research, examined the reasons behind its box office failure. The film struggled to find success during its original release in Japan and a few years later when it was distributed in the United States, with the intention of capitalizing on the popularity of Fritz the Cat (Bakshi, 1972). During its American re-release, the distributor, Xanadu Productions, gave the film the new English title Cleopatra, Queen of Sex and an unauthorized MPAA self-rating of 'X' in an attempt to attract viewers neither of which were a success at sparking the audience's interest.
