<text>
Based on real events, the story focuses on Pete, a child growing up in 1975 who wants to play on the boys Little League Baseball team. However, because Pete is a girl, the team captain only agrees Pete can play if she disguises herself as a boy. Though her teammates are supportive, conflict arises when visiting attendees discover Pete’s secret.

Going by what is explicitly stated in the short and the synopsis on the official short’s website, Pete is cisgender and the story fits a gender creative categorization. However, in a few interviews with Bret Parker, the director, and Pete Barma, the inspiration for Pete, the two have discussed the character’s gender identity. In the 2023 Animation World Network article “‘Pete’ Unpacks 1970’s Gender Norms and a Mother’s Unwavering Love,” interviewer Victoria Davis asked a question regarding Pete’s identity to which Parker responded:

It was important for us to represent the time period and, for Pete and mom, the language and understanding of any language around trans or non-binary children did not exist in 1975. Mom instinctively understood and supported Pete’s chosen identity but, for her, Pete was still her daughter. Therefore, she defended Pete in the only way she knew how to at the time. This incredible defense, love, and support, combined with the complexity of not understanding what it meant to be trans informed the rest of Pete’s life and identity.

With this aspect of the film in mind, I have decided to include the implicit and transgender tags to reflect this interpretation and perspective about Pete.

To learn more about whom Pete is based on, I recommend the 2023 article from the Seattle Gay News “Meet Pete, the storyteller behind the Queer short film” by Lindsey Anderson.</text>

While Bob and Linda scramble to make ends meet, their kids investigate a mystery unearthed by the sinkhole.

Although no one on the animation team has directly confirmed it, many viewers interpret Bob as bisexual. As noted in Emma Flint's 2021 Digital Spy article, “Bob's Burgers — Bob Belcher is actually bisexual (and always has been),” people have been examining the character’s sexuality for several years. The most notable instance of Bob talking about his sexuality occured in season 4 episode 5 "Turkey in a Can" in an exchange between Bob and a deli man.

Another family member, Gene, who frequently appears in drag, has also been discussed in terms of representation. In a 2016 Yahoo interview “'Bob's Burger's Creator Loren Bouchard Talks Holidays With the Belcher's, Gene's Feminism, and More Megan Mullaly“ Bouchard addressed Gene's possible gender fluidity in a way that allows for an open interpretation about the character.

There are, however, several canonically queer characters in the film, including Marshmallow, who appears in the end credits dance scene. Originally voiced by David Herman, a cisgender actor, Marshmallow was recast in 2023. Bouchard announced the change in a response on X stating that activist and model Jari Jones would voice the role. Jones officially started portraying the character in the season 14 episode 1 "Fight at the Not Okay Chore-ral."

Another queer character who appears in the film is Little King Trashmouth. His sexuality was first mentioned when Linda talks about him in season 3, episode 17 "Two for Tina." Little King Trashmouth (and sometimes with his husband, Gary) has appeared in the annual Bob’s Burgers Pride merchandise, particularly in the 2021 and 2023 collections.
</text>

                <text>
In a city filled with different air, earth, fire, and water elements, this story focuses on an immigrant fire family. When the daughter, Ember, eventually crosses paths with a water element named Wade. Despite the two coming from completely different backgrounds, they begin to fall in love.

Wade’s younger sibling, Lake, is credited as the first nonbinary character in a Pixar film, and is voiced by nonbinary voice actor Kai Ava Hauser. In the film, Lake’s nonbinary identity is not stated explicitly, and she is addressed with she/her pronouns. However, Lake is canonically nonbinary in some of Elemental’s related media. In the book Unlikely Friends (Rusu, 2023), their role is expanded further throughout the story, and their pronouns are exclusively they/them.

Additionally, due to the characters being elementals there is an ambiguity in the character design. I have included androgyny and queer to reflect this aspect. If anyone who worked on the film can confirm whether there were supposed to be additional queer background characters (in particular the couples seen dancing in the park), please feel free to reach out, and I will adjust the categorization accordingly.
</text>

Animated in a German Expressionist style—an art form deeply despised by the Nazis—the short is set in the final years of the Weimar Republic, during the Nazis' rise to power and eventual control over Germany.

The pink triangle symbol was designed by the Nazis during World War II as a badge to identify and classify queer AMAB individuals imprisoned in concentration camps.

This is the first animated film to explore the significance of the pink triangle. In 1993, the television program In the Life featured an excerpt of the short in episode 303 as part of a news segment on the pink triangle.
